Tis the season to make gifts. How many of us are making jewelry gifts and how many are we making? I'll be doing some for 2 daughters and a grandaughter.

Hmmm, my son, his friend, my friend, my son-in-law- WOW! That's weird, all these people are MEN?!?!?! Usually, it's the women in my life Ho-Ho-HO!! I only hope the items I'm making are received well, since it will definitely not be the traditional-type man gift :-D

My grandson wants a necklace so bad, but I don't know what to make for him. He's 12 and he keeps wanting things that I think would be too feminine. I don't want him to get teased. I'm really bugged about what to make for him that he'll like, but that will be appropriate, too.
Any ideas?

I seem to live in a no-thanks-I-don't-wear-jewelry-zone , so no jewelry gift making for me. Or if so, it will be last-minute-gifts. As for your grandson, Tela, my first thought was leather, too. Second thought: isn't it a pity that a child/teen cannot wear what he/she wants because it doesn't fit the current role model? In the past men could wear opulent jewelry as a status symbol. But I digress, and absolutely get your point that you don't want to see him hurt. Do you have examples of what he likes in particular? I remember, you have one of "his" designs on JL, it was dramatic and darkly romantic. Reminds me of Edward and Bella. I guess that is the taste among the teens. Drama and danger is cool! In case you decide for the sober leather route, I can see your trademark pendants hung from some leather cords, maybe combined with a chain. Or one of the Chan Luu style leather combined bracelet/necklaces? They have the advantage of being versatile and unisex, and they look great with any natural stone.

Thanks for the suggestions Yes, it is a shame he can't wear what he wants. He is very artistic and slightly feminine (I'm so glad he'll never read this!!). He actually has some great jewelry ideas, but being in Jr High, they really aren't fitting for him now- highschool maybe. Highschool is much more flexible, Jr High is and always has been Child Hell! Yesterday, my mother in law was here to visit after spending a week in Orlando. She brought the kids some Harry Potter stuff including a marble claw pendant that went to my granddaughter. My grandson liked it so much that I think I'll try something like that. I have a big Lapis marble that I think would be great.

Tela, you are right, JR High/Middle School can be hell if anyony steps outside the prescribed box and I am not sure who sets the rules?? I think the marble claw is a great idea! You will come up with just the right gift.

My first for a boy was an ammonite shell hanging on a black leather cord. I used copper to wrap the shell just in a natural outline style of the spiral with a few spokes to contain it and connect the spiral. It was very simple, not feminine or masculine- just natural. What a hit! Tela- Abby hook has a way cool claw tut- if you want to see a frame of reference for your claw.

Yup, I went and checked out Abby's tute. I remember seeing it before. She does lovely work and from all indication her tutes are great. I haven't gotten one before, but I was tempted to get the claw. What I ended up doing for my grandson was to take a big round lapis bead and wrapping all the way around from top to bottom, twice. Very simple, but he loves it. He was adamant about having that bead. I made a black cord necklace with stainless steel clasp- same as the bead wrap. Your ammonite sounds great, too. If I had one, I'm positive he would have wanted it. He would have loved the dino poo I used to have, too. LOL! Boys.

Hmm.... Only one I guess.. For the "secret santa" game on my Etsy team. My "traditional" holiday gifts for family and friends are decorated cookies, gingerbread houses, baskets with assorted cookies, etc And that reminds me that it's time to start making gingerbread dough.. have a new cookie-idea for this year

MMMMM..... I love home baked goods at Christmas time. My mom was the baker and I really miss having the smells and goodies around. I can't bake- didn't get that gene. Never took to it. My SIL/BIL sent over a whole bunch last year that came in real handy as I had a house full of visitors. Will you post pictures of your goodies, Laura? I can imagine the smell and taste from a distance. I can tell that I will be getting my jewelry presents done at the last minute- as usual.
