In Germany we have the four-leaf clover, a ladybug, a horseshoe, a penny, a chimney sweep, a fly agaric (toadstool) etc.as symbols for good luck, used as a small gift or decoration in particular on New Years eve. I'm not superstitious at all, but I believe in the power of little gifts. Do you also have such a custom, too, and what are your lucky charms? Of course I'm asking with the idea in mind that these symbols can be turned into something jewelry...

Rabbit's foot is another or a lucky chip (poker, bingo, slot). We always ate black eyed peas and cornbread for good luck on New Years. Or, Hopping John. www.cooks.com/rec/doc/0,1618,149187-241192,00.html

Trust me to come up with this one - but it's true!!! Black cats are seen as lucky over here! Not that I would suggest giving a full size one as a gift! ;D
Sounds like this could be a fun challenge and now that Christmas is out of the way it seems I have soo much more time and soo much less stress! ;D ha ha

A piggy! How could I forget the lucky piggies. And owls, too, according to the German wikipedia. Animals are your department, Glenda and Tela. ;D
Glenda, are you already working on something? I'll try if I can come up with something until tomorrow night, but I can't promise, very busy.

Oooh piggies that sounds like fun!! Maybe we could start the challenge at midnight and have it go into the New Year?! I'm not working on anything specific for the challenge at the moment but I think my muse would be up for it! ;D

Start at midnight, great idea! We can let it run for a few days, lucky gifts for friends are still good well into the New Year! Ok, it's official now, and will be entered into our challenge calendar in a minute. The Lucky Charm Challenge: Make a charm, either choosing from the suggestions above, or create a new lucky symbol, it's up to you. The luck is within the good wishes that you fill it with. (Mary, I wonder why your trinkets come to mind? ) It's intended to be a small token for friends, with the best New Year wishes. No end date. Luck doesn't have a deadline.

Ok, since I first read this, I have had my thinking cap on. Problem is, all I can think of is hummingbirds. I am trying to do a nice big one for BIL/SIL to hang on their sliding glass door in front of their busy hummingbird feeders. I hate it when a project gets stuck in your head and won't let go. Are hummingbirds good luck??

Sure they are, Tela! Or if they aren't, they should be! Just look at them, so pretty and unique. They must be a symbol for ..uhmm, wait... burning calories? I've once read that they use up an enormous amount of energy and have to work hard to keep their metabolism going. ... had to check the ever-useful source: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HummingbirdAnd there you are (scroll down to "myth and culture"): hummingbirds have been talismans in Aztec times! It's not exactly a symbol for luck, but "The Aztec god Huitzilopochtli is often depicted as a hummingbird". That's sufficient in my book. ;D Looking forward to your swarm.

Sweet, hummingbird it is, then. I will think of him as a lucky mascot. I'm not even kidding. If you knew my bil/sil, you'd know they will think of him like that.
