I need to improve the variety of my pictures of pieces in my store. With the new pieces being added, I am including a picture of me holding the piece, for scale and I am trying out pictures of the piece on a book. I have lots of gemstone books. It's harder to find pages for cabbed material, but some of them have a page or a note about them. My first one was too haphazard...... Attachments:

... the second one is better, but I'm not sure I like the highlighting. I like the composition better, though. ...... Attachments:

... and this last one, I like a whole lot better. I selected the appropriate text with PS and increased the black in levels to "bold" the appropriate text. What do you think of this last one?? Attachments:

I like this last one! Informative and obvious, without being too 'in your face". Classy.

Thank you, Joyce It's always good to more opinions. I have been looking at pictures so much, they all start to look the same and I'm sick of them! I think it's cool how the stone looks like it is popping out of the page. I have no idea how that happened, but it's neat. Hope they all look like that. This is so time consuming, though, I think I'll leave it for special pieces. Like this ammolite. Attachments:

I should add that I am posting the citation for book and page with the pictures in the store.

Interesting, but I probably wouldn't use them as "cover" picture. Too busy. There's too much going on with the text and the piece competing for attention. A conflict of priorities. And not easy on the eyes with all those lines of text in the bg.
Text in jewelry pics is sometimes nice, but it looks best when shot at creative angle and using shallow DOF. (now it looks almost like the pendants where photoshoped on top a scanned page)

I see your points. No, it wouldn't be the lead picture- I agree it is really busy. It is more for scale than anything else. I don't like to use vegetation or much of any props, really.

The thing with scale bugs me lots.. It's not about your pics now, but in general. I've been using my hand for scale, but I'm not sure it's a perfect solution. Especially since I take that one pic really carelessly (some are so-so, but others are real porn). It ruins the illusion and brings down to earth too soon. But many people prefer to see items in hand as it's easiest to understand the size. If using text for scale, then you have to give the scale of the text It didn't cross my mind I could use it to determine the size of the stone. Lifesize mannequin bust would be nice to have..

lol! I had a bust and it always looked like a bust. I never liked it and gave it to my daughter who uses it for decoration now.

I really like the idea of information and stone in the one photo.
The bolding of the appropriate text is an excellent idea - is it possible to lighten the other text to make the page look less busy?
I have never seen this done before and you may well set a new trend with the idea.
I have to agree that the photo that really "popped" looked faked, shame cos it wasn't!

Thank you for your input, Vicky. I'd be in heaven if I could find a book just on cabbing stones. I tried googling and haven't found one. All my gem books only briefly mention some of the cabbed stones. ARGH!

Your stones are floating! I'd be in heaven if I could find a book just on cabbing stones. I tried googling and haven't found one. All my gem books only briefly mention some of the cabbed stones. ARGH! This site looks really intriguing, and they seem to have a quite a few of specialized books. www.rocksandgems.info/books/books_lapidary.shtmlI suppose you have most of these books anyway?
