I was wondering how much interest there would be in my doing some quick instructions for PS or Gimp. I have been helping a fellow member, Susan, with PS6 and thought that if enough people were interested, I could post some quickie instructions for an older version of PS. The CS versions are too much program for me, so I use PS6. One could also probably follow with Gimp, though the program looks a little different and uses different terms than PS. If you don't know what Gimp is- it is a fabulous FREE version of a program similar to PS. www.gimp.org/downloads/ PS is quite expensive, so Gimp is a great alternative. You could follow my instructions with PS7 and older versions, too. Nothing elaborate- just enough to get you going. I remember when I was first learning to use it, it intimidated the hell out of me. If you use it already- I am going to open a thread for tips and tricks.

OMG, Tela, I was just browsing through all this and saw how you back lit a photo. I took a break and looked at PS. I have the free version. Right now I have to go free and certainly download Gimp. I would be very interested in learning and getting any tips. I read the posts on backgrounds and need to change mine. Right now I'm using a piece of slate and it seems everything blends in too much. I like your back lit pictures but don't know if that is offered as a freebee. I also like the painted glass effect.

I like the painted glass that Ivy did, too. Maybe, she'll post how she does it. I have a piece of white plexiglass that came with my photostudio thingie, but hers looks better, I think. There is a filter in PS, I'll be checking out Gimp for theirs, that allows you to do that with light. I actually used a plug in (3rd party) filter for that picture, but I didn't really have to, PS could have done it. It looks impressive, but isn't that hard to do.

I'm going back through all my pieces to update my font and tweak any photos that need it. So, the PS stuff is fresh in my mind. I thought I would share this before and after, too. Before looked good, after looks even better. It wasn't that difficult.

Tela, you have helped me find this new world of Photoshop and I love it!! Your instructions were thorough and have opened door for me with post-processing of my jewelry photos. I see here that you are offering to share your knowledge with others. Wow, this is a gift!! Since you shared your step by step instructions with me I have been working on my photos every day. I think of this process like learning a bike; you encourage getting on and then you let go once the technique is understood. It's up to us to make the pop-a-wheelies and ride hands free!!
Much thanks to you for my lessons in Photoshop. Awesome!!
~Susan

Susan, I am really glad to be able to help! PS is one of those things that is so dense that it's hard to figure where to begin. With just a few tools under your belt, it's easier to feel confident about trying new things with it. I'm probably going to use the emails as the basis for the instructions, so I'm glad to hear that it worked for you.

Yes, please! I would very much appreciate it. And, what's more to the point, I need it! ;D Need to work on my non-existent post-processing skills.
There is a free version available of PS? I know I can download Gimp for free, but didn't know about Photoshop.
Thank you for your generous offer, Tela!

I use picnik at the moment. Not the paid version and only the basics of, so I would be interested in learning more about PS perhaps with a view to swapping. If all you guys are going to use it it makes sense for me to follow!! Then I'll have sooo many brains to pick! ;D

OK, I'll work on the instructions this weekend and use my husband's Gimp, too. I'm going to try to give instructions side by side.

Tela: you seem indefatigable! All I'm using for picture editing right now is Irfan View - it's a very very useful, easy free program, but it was not designed to enhance pictures. www.irfanview.com/

Irfanview is awesome!! I use it when I don't need PS. I have been using it for over 10 years and it has migrated to every computer that I own. It's my default photo viewer. Oh, I get fatigued! I just figured that since I already wrote most of it, I could easily post it here, too.
