Tela, I hope you don't mind that I kind of kidnap your idea, and I hope it doesn't interfere (again) with your creative process. As I said on the thread started by Tela jewelrymakers.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=wire&action=display&thread=31 , I would like to challenge everyone to come up with a pair of earrings of unusual shape. Rules: * Create a pair of earrings * with a horizontal element * ignore wearabilty for the time being, be as experimental (or not) as you like * needs not be perfectly executed, this is the layout which can be improved later on * to be posted Sunday evening or Monday morning * post your earrings in this thread PS: you don't need to limit yourself to only one pair... And now... let's have fun! modded to add: Are you game? ? ? ?

Hmmmmm..... as if great earrings weren't challenging enough I'm game, though I haven't a clue what to do. Thanks, you gave me a new way to look at doing some.

After working on these yesterday, I have to say you are the lucky one for having an excuse! This is going to be a tough one!

OK, I have one finished, but I don't know if I like it or if it is really what the challenge is about. Let me know what you think.

LOL, Tela and her triangles I love the balance and the kinetic element in these!!!!!

I like them! They remind me of those hangy things (balls!!!) that dangle on string from a wooden frame you pull the end one out and it bangs onto the next and the last one in the line pops out and bangs on the one next to it......and so on!! Can't think what they are called!!!

They are lovely! Beautiful! And I agree, very Tela, LOL! It has an unfussy shape, but a lot of interesting details, with a touch of steampunk. It would also make a successful tute, I'm sure. Now I would like to know, do you feel you have achieved what you set out to, i.e. break out of your mold re earrings? Oh, and yes, of course it is what the challenge is about. Hope to see the second one soon.

;D Glenda! I don't know what they are called, either, but I know what you mean. I'm going to work on some earrings. I'm not thrilled with these. And, YES!!! The triangles! ;D I couldn't figure out what to do without using triangles.

Tela, Love the triangles! I think these work and have good movement to them. I am stuck as to what to create!

Thanks, Christine- yes, they do have a lot of movement. I like earrings with movement. The little thing that the drops are attached to swing, too. Maybe I will like them more after I make two and they are patinaed.

Who knew a horizontal element could be so difficult?? I am on my 3rd prototype and still not thrilled. My goal for this rainy chilly day is one earring I really like!

I'm struggling, too. I have some ideas, but all of them would require a lot of patience and a lot of time, two things that are scarce here. What have I done?! Horizontal is awful!

Yes, Renate, you are evil! But, you got us thinking! ;D I have rethought my whole approach and have made a pair that I will post when they are done tumbling. I stopped trying to reinvent the wheel and wha-lah. I'd actually wear them, too. The others I didn't like so much, but I did like using the parts in new ways. That was fun. I wouldn't have thought of it, had it not been for the challenge.

I just finished these. The pic isn't too good- I'm in a hurry today. I wanted to get these up while I have a chance. These are 14g, hammered and textured. They actually hang straight across, too. LOL! Don't they look like clothes hangers?? I'd wear 'em, anyway.

Well, well. These are ultra-minimalistic! And as horizontal as they can possibly be. ;D
I couldn't resist to add a chunky drop crystal or something like that. Anything vertical.... ;D - ouch, don't hit me! LOL!

Ooooo.. stop! Don't move! ;D I was in the process of hammering something extremely close to that when the photo was posted. Only mine were supposed to have a hole drilled in the center and probably a couple of contrasting beads - one on each end (wrapped or suspended). It even had a name - something in the line of "looking for balance"... and I don't want to make them anymore .. too close.. But just now another idea struck me and I want to be the first to make it!! Do you think wrapping the head with aluminum foil would help to keep ideas inside? Too bad I have to wait for the morning... it's too late for hammering here

Oh no! Sorry about that! I think you should still do them and post. It will be good to see how two ppl can independently come to a similar design. Post them both. That's funny about your name... I just posted a piece to my blog that I finished today called Balancing Act!! It's not earrings, either. LOL! Great minds.... with or without foil. LOL!

I had thought about something similar - which is probably only logical, because if you think "horizontal" this is the idea you come up with first, and then go from there.
For the next challenge I would like to suggest that we all hold back until all are ready to post. It would be a great demonstration of Great Minds at work. ;D

Excellent idea, Renate! I didn't mean to jump the gun, so to speak. Next time- we post at the same time.

I reserve the name "horizontally challenged". ok? Tela - I'm not sure my first idea was doable at all. I have some difficulties with it.. Need to hammer and drill a hole in the center. The piece I have flattened is too narrow for drilling and already too thin to hammer further. So I need to try a fatter wire.. which might look too fat... (I already have 5 sketches .. and they keep coming.. I wonder if at least one will be doable)

That sounds frustrating But, keep those sketches, you never know when they might spur you along to do something else. I was feeling horizontally challenged, too. That's why I did the easiest thing I could think of.

ok, here's one of the sketches done Don't laugh too hard I expect honest feedback on this one. Second earring is not done yet, so you could save me some time and fingers by telling it's not worth it. copper, coral and ocean jasper

I really like them! I like the design and color choices. I like that you made a small drop from the horizontal top, thereby keeping the overall horizontal feel. Well done, I think it's a keeper. But, don't hold me responsible for sore fingers!

Looking at this, nobody would know that you are horizontally challenged. ;D It's an interesting shape, and I like it. But. For my taste too naked. I think I'd like to see something that would give the curls a purpose, and the beads a balance on both sides. Maybe add tiny beads in the outer corners created where both shapes meet. Yikes, how do I describe it? I mean where where the heartshape is coiled, and the outer curl. I can only hope you understand why I'm trying to say.

Thanks Tela - me thinks you are not telling something I haven't been able to find a single person who would go wow about them (yet). The typical reaction is a puzzled look on the face, and comments that can be summarized as "interesting" ;D When translated, it probably means nonsense. Renate - I see what you mean The outside curls is what's bugging me most. I think they are too big/spacious and the diameter is the same as the curl of the heart shaped wire in the middle. In programmers language, I'm still not sure if it's a bug or a feature I can quickly wrap 4mm' s in those "holes" to see how it looks. I'm afraid it'll start looking like a cross. For some reason I've remembered this guy:

Honestly- I wasn't just saying that, I like them a lot! They appeal to the minimalist in me. That little guy is cute, who is he?
