UPDATE: I think this is a great challenge and I'm really excited about it. However, because of everyone's concerns about time, I am officially extending this to November 30. This needs to be fun AND doable. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- OK, guy and girls, based on this thread, jewelrymakers.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=natureofcreativity&action=display&thread=70 I think we need a new challenge. This one will be time sensitive. It is Tues. night here. On next Tues, any time during the day or night post your creation. Your task: Make a piece of any kind of jewelry, in any way, with whatever you want that is inspired by one piece of music, preferably one of your favorites. When posting your piece, post a youtube link to the song- so make sure your choice of music is represented on youtube Also, describe how it makes you feel and how you translated that to your piece. Have fun!! And, please everyone, the more the merrier! ;D edited to fix link

I am sobbing along with Mary as I have a deadline and won't be able to participate either. This is an interesting idea and I will try it at some point.

Mary, Christine, I'm sure something can be done about the deadline, if that's the only problem. When would it be more convenient for both of you?

Actually, I'm pressed for time, too. Let's have a different deadline. ;D

End of this month? (I'm yet to figure out how to get inspired by music. Without cheating. Might take forever..)

Two weeks plus would be the best for me assuming my muse decides to cooperate. Mary, when a daughter wants to talk, it usually is on their time frame and a momma has to listen. Good for you for keeping the door open.

I've been thinking of this since yesterday, and came to the conclusion that my approach to jewelry is very literally, and not symbolic or poetic or emotional at all. And music is a very emotional thing. I've hit a wall here. ;D
Can YOU translate emotions into jewelry? Maybe I can, but it will be a long and difficult way for me.
How do YOU approach it? Does it come to you naturally?

@renate For me, songs inspire me visually, but they also bring up memories. There are certain songs that remind me of specific times or places. For instance the first time that I heard Blondie's song "Call Me", I was smack dab in the middle of Times Square for the first time. The song "Daniel" by Elton John reminds me of my brother who passed away or the van I was sitting in when I first heard it. I was looking out the window at fields of corn. An emotion, a memory or a visual can be interpreted any way you like- you're the artist. For "Daniel", I might choose my brother's favorite color and an overall stylized shape of a stalk of corn. Or, I might choose A cacophony of abstract wires to represent Blondie and the bustle of NY. Think of your favorite songs and why they are your favorites. Deep down, you have made personal connections with the music. Even if it is a song that you love because of the beat, you could choose to do a strong regular repeat with beads. I'm inspired by music in a myriad of ways and I'm sure you are, too. You just sound frustrated.

Thank you for the insight into your creative process, Tela, it is helpful indeed. I'm not exactly frustrated, it is just that my taste in music and my jewelrymaking inspirations don't seem to be located in adjacent brain areas. But your words were very helpful in that it got me thinking what my favourite music pieces are besides my preferred bands or singers. It's an odd mixture of very different musical styles and themes, and there surely is a lot to start from, and I have at least half a dozen vague ideas now. Putting on the thinking cap really helps.

What a beautiful song! So full of yearning. It evokes for me a slow dance on a mountaintop, in the middle of a moonlit field, that my husband and I once had. The beauty of nature and God's hand was all around and our love was part of it. Very moving. I can see the song in your piece. The piece is beautiful and done with your typical perfection. It is very evocative. I love the stars over the raging ocean. (At least, that's what I see.) And, the solitary man sitting on the beach. It's easy to tell when a piece is really inspired. And, look how quickly you got it done! Well done, Mary! Tell your nephew that is an awesome song, too. www.youtube.com/watch?v=plRqXM8sFEQ

You have taken a beautiful and soulful song and wove it into this incredible tapestry. I can feel the words when I look at your piece. You are one talented spirit!

Firstly, Laura, you are a dear!! I loved the easy right click and paste you showed me how to do:)) Secondly here is the info regarding this design and this challenge. The music this design is inspired by is written and sung by my nephew, It's called "Waiting for the Sunrise" and you can listen to it here www.youtube.com/watch?v=plRqXM8sFEQThe song fills me with longing, and that longing was channeled into a wish to express it and its beauty with my hands by weaving a tapestry. I love the mystery in the songs theme and wanted to capture that in my design. I feel the strength and courage of the writer to see things through to completion and wait for hope to rise even when it looks dark and appears to be long in coming. I had no idea how to do a 'tapestry like' weave and did not have a clue how it should look, so I borrowed loosely from the song itself and wove a somewhat stylized sun rising along with a stylized mysterious type sky. I am very happy with it for a first try:) Also, the grey looking button at the bottom of the tapestry is actually blue and the same color as the kyanite, but sometimes plastics don't photograph well.

Tela, I love the imagery of you and your love on a mountain top, with beauty and God's hand:) Very stirring to think of that moment with you:)
Christine, I am so glad to hear that it is an evocative design, it satisfies me to hear that I captured and transferred something to the viewer:)

What a surprising, unexpected, mysterious piece, Mary! It is definitely "musical". And this is such a haunting song. You beautifully caught the mood and the mystery.
PS: please note the horizontal elements... ;.)

I feel rotten!!! This was my challenge and I can't meet the deadline! I have been so insanely busy. And, my muse has not been cooperating. Shame on me!!! I WILL do it, though! I had a million ideas. One almost came out but the gauge wire was the wrong size. I was so disheartened. Enough with excuses, I have to get back to work......

This was a whole new way of creating for me. Recently, I captured a glorious family hour in a necklace . Creating from a song drew from this same creativity. John Lennon's "Imagine". I hope this link goes through: www.youtube.com/watch?v+XLgYAHHkPFs&feature=relatedThis song has always inspired me to look beyond when making decisions...what is behind the next door or in my piece a gate. This was done with Mary Tucker's awesome Twining Tutorial and Abby Hook's leaves from her new book. Done in 18 and 28G copper. The leaf became the clasp. I am excited because I took techniques I learned from people who inspire me and made my own design. Thanks for the challenge. C and C welcome Attachments:
